The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that quantified that distributions of industry payments to physicians in Massachusetts. The researchers used 2009 data from the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services, which collects information on payments that physicians receive from industry over $50.
The researchers found that, while all specialties were likely to receive payments from industry, urologists and gastroenterologists were most likely to receive industry payments, followed by rheumatologists and cardiologists. Cardiologists and othopedic surgeons were likely to receive the highest industry payments, followed by psychiatrists and hematology/oncology.
